Private tutoring prices in Switzerland: hourly rates and home lessons

Understand the hourly rate, lesson duration and travel costs before choosing a private tutor in Switzerland.

How much does private tutoring cost in Switzerland? On MonProf, the student rate is CHF 34 per hour for compulsory school, CHF 40 for gymnasium or general education school (ECG), and CHF 47 for university or a university of applied sciences (HES/FH). These are MonProf rates, not an average for every provider in Switzerland.

A tutor travelling to your home adds CHF 5 per lesson. A one-hour compulsory-school lesson with travel therefore costs CHF 39. Start with the learner’s level, then check the duration, location and frequency.

How much is a lesson at home?

  • Compulsory school: CHF 34 + CHF 5 travel = CHF 39 for 60 minutes.
  • Gymnasium / ECG: CHF 40 + CHF 5 travel = CHF 45 for 60 minutes.
  • University / HES: CHF 47 + CHF 5 travel = CHF 52 for 60 minutes.

The travel supplement is per lesson, not per hour. For 90 minutes at compulsory-school level with tutor travel, the calculation is 1.5 × CHF 34 + CHF 5 = CHF 56. Agree the location and format with your tutor before the lesson.

What monthly budget should you plan?

Four one-hour lessons at compulsory-school level cost CHF 136 without travel, or CHF 156 with one tutor journey for each lesson. Four one-hour gymnasium / ECG lessons with travel cost CHF 180. The exact monthly total depends on the number and duration of lessons actually booked.

For a short revision period, start by identifying the chapters to cover. For regular support, choose a sustainable schedule and review it after the first lessons. More hours do not automatically mean better learning.

Choose the tutor’s level and teaching language

A tutor offering mathematics may not teach every school level. Read the levels on the profile and describe the course or exam you are preparing. Check the languages in which the tutor can explain the lesson; teaching English as a subject and teaching maths in English are different things.

For example, browse tutors in Geneva and nearby areas or tutors around Lausanne. The profile shows the tutor’s actual municipality. These regional selections also include nearby towns.

At home or online: what should you compare?

Compare the full cost, the learner’s ability to concentrate and the practical arrangements. An online lesson can avoid tutor travel, provided the tutor agrees to that format. For a home lesson, confirm where you will meet. The same school-level hourly rate applies on MonProf.

  • Check the level and subject before booking.
  • Read the profile, teaching languages and available slots.
  • Write the topic, difficulty and deadline in the booking notes.
  • Choose a one-off or recurring slot according to your needs.

Need help between lessons?

For a specific exercise, MonProf AI can guide you by voice and camera. It is a separate service from private lessons with a human tutor. Use the tutor directory for sustained personal support and the AI for explanations between lessons.
